Take note of the following:
- the number and frequency of the cuts
30 cuts in the first 2.5min, collected in bursts of cuts separated by longer periods of dollying shots. The initial long panning/dollying shots are designed to give a sense of awe and wonder. they highlight the scale of the space Will's character is in.
- the duration between the cuts
fast classic cinematic cuts, which establish the setting and relationship between people/objects in the scene, before following the action of the scene. The duration of our longer shots is dictated by the character's movement through space. Later the shot length is dictated by the script and the actors' performance through a classic, shot/reverse shot, establishing shot, cutaway technique.
- what purpose each cut serves/ how are time and space established via the cuts?
these cuts work to:
establish or reinforce the spatial relationships between characters, characters and objects and characters and their location.
Direct our attention within the action
build/maintain a sense of pace and energy
- are transitions used or are they hard cuts?
All are hard cuts, traditionally in mainstream cinema fades or other types of transitions denote time passing.
- what are the relationship between shots - graphical, compositional, aesthetic
Shots in this clip achieve a huge range of effects through their relationships with each other. These include, for example,
Establish the scene, Establish the mood, communicate the internal state of characters. Communicate the location of characters in space and the relationships between different spaces.
etc
- how does sound work with or against the cuts?
The sound within this clip is diagetic in nature (excusing the musical sting that happens with the first establishing shot), this sound however is heightened, the fan noises are synthetic, the lift sounds are synthetic and heightened, to convey/hint at the scifi tones.
