Find a piece of video with an interesting soundtrack – describe it carefully and think about how it works with the images.
The composition (non-dietetic sound) and the soundtrack (dietetic sound) should be discussed differently.
Speaking about the soundtrack.
Is it naturalistic?
The sound throughout this scene is heightened realism, often there will only be the composition and a singular diegetic foley sound such as the house sound at 1.23ish. at 1.51 the sound of the punch impact is noticeably absent as time slows down.
Is it an abstract relationship?
The relationship smoothly flows between heightened realism with only key sounds presented in a loud and exaggerated style, to sections with only voice and musical composition,
There are also interesting diegetic sound effects for non-naturalistic actions such as the time slowdowns, and acrobatic movements with "WHOOSHES"
Is it emotional or unemotional?
Unemotional? I'm not really sure what that means in this context, the sound attempts to build a sense of pace, drama, building action, stakes. Are those emotions, I guess so.
What effect does the soundtrack produce with the images?
They build on each other, there is an interplay of tension and release in each of them.
Watch the same footage without sound and compare the effect.
Without sound, the scene has a different pace/energy structure.
